Huge posters and displays were put up to welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rajkot also has a special connection with PM Modi. It was here that Modi contested his first election in a by poll after taking over as the CM of Gujarat in 2002.
The city in Saurashtra region is also a stronghold of present CM Vijay Rupani. With assembly elections slated later this year the BJP made the PM road show a grand affair .
RAIN NOT A DETTERENT
Rajkot witnessed heavy rains throughout the day. But that was the least that could deter the enthusiastic crowd from gathering in large numbers.
Even though the road show was scheduled to start at 7 pm in the evening, people had started gathering since 11 am itself.
Thousands of people were seen chanting Modi-Modi slogan in heavy rains. The cavalcade took about 55 minutes to reach the airport after it started from Aaji Dam.
IN PATIDAR STRONGHOLD
The show of strength by BJP in Rajkot was also important for the party as the Saurashtra region is known as a Patidar stronghold.
Gujarat has witnessed massive protests by the politically strong Patidar community for last two years.
The party had made several attempts in the last two years to reach out to the agitating community.
The BJP is hoping that Modi’s road show in the Patidar bastion will work in its favor.
