Modi will be in US on June 25-26 and will meet Trump on June 26.
After the US trip, Modi will be in the Netherlands on June 27.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will meet United States President Donald Trump later this month, has decided to club his US visit with whirlwind tours of Portugal and the Netherlands.
PM Modi will first fly to Portugal on June 24 before his two-day trip to the US. On June 25 and 26 Modi will be in the US. On the way back to India, the prime minister is expected to halt in the Netherlands on June 27.
PM Modi is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump on June 26 at the White House, in what will be the two leaders’ first meeting is since Trump became president.
Announcing Modi’s packed schedule, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay said that the US trip has “its own significance because it will be the first visit of the Prime Minister to engage with the new leader, with the new President after the elections last year.”
The two are expected to talk about a number of issues including security.
“All areas of bilateral cooperation and also concerning with the region, the global situation, security, terrorism, stability will be discussed. We look forward to this particular visit and discussion between the Prime Minister and President Trump providing not only further impetus but further direction to this relationship,” Baglay said.
Modi is also expected to highlight India’s worries over proposed changes to American rules governing H1-B visas, which are widely used by Indian engineers and information technology workers.
Modi’s meeting with Trump will give Indo-US ties “a new strength, a new direction, new priorities and also consolidating the gains that have been achieved over the past several years”, Baglay added.
The meet comes soon after President Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Accord, an agreement that India has vowed to abide by.
While in the US, Modi is expected to meet with business leaders and with the Indian community in the United States. Currently, he is only scheduled to visit Washington, DC, but Baglay did not rule out a visit to other American cities.
“As of now Washington DC is the primary place which the Prime Minister will visit. However, I might say that the programme is still evolving,” Baglay said.
Before, the US trip, PM Modi will be in Portugal where he will meet Antonio Costa, the Portugal Prime Minister of Indian origin, in Lisbon.
Modi meet with Costa will strengthen India and Portugal’s “economic, scientific and cultural ties and we expect to finalise and sign documents essentially which are in the nature of memoranda of understanding”.
Costa, who is of a Goan descent, visited India earlier this year as the chief guest at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas in Goa. During the trip, Costa was said to have struck up a personal friendship with PM Modi and even gifted him a football jersey signed by legendary Portugal player Cristiano Ronaldo.
During the visit to the Netherlands, PM Modi will hold talks with Prime Minister Mark Rutte in The Hague, and will call on the king of the Netherlands Willem Alexander. Modi’s trip to the European country marks New Delhi and Amsterdam marking 70 years of diplomatic ties.
“Modi will meet Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and will hold official talks,” Baglay said today, adding economic relations form the core of India’s ties with The Netherlands, which is the leading foreign investor in India.
“A large number of Dutch companies are active in India. A significant number of Indian companies are based in The Netherlands, so we look forward to boosting economic corporation and relations, bilateral trade and relations, and also cooperation in other areas too,” Baglay added.
